How to prepare a 3Shape case for outsourced design

Before exporting a 3Shape case, decide what the receiving team needs: scan geometry, an order with its prescription, or a project intended for continued editing.

The short answer

Agree the receiving workflow before exporting. A scan exported as STL or PLY is different from an order or editable design project. 3Shape’s Dental Manager documentation describes accepted-order scan export and licensing prerequisites. Confirm your Dental System version, enabled export options and required deliverables before transferring the case.

What is the difference between scan export and case transfer?

A scan export gives the receiving workflow geometry. It does not automatically communicate the full design brief or guarantee that an existing design remains editable. Keep the prescription and tooth references connected to the case.

  • State whether you need a new design, a revision or a project handoff.
  • Identify the software version and the receiver’s intended workflow.
  • Agree output formats separately from the method used to send inputs.

What does the official scan export workflow require?

3Shape’s support article says scan export is performed from accepted orders in Dental Manager and requires the relevant TRIOS Scan STL Export option. It identifies PLY export as available from Dental System 2021. Follow the documentation for your installed version and reseller configuration.

  • Check that the order has been accepted before looking for scan export.
  • Name separate exported scans clearly so repeated default names do not overwrite earlier files.
  • Confirm the upper, lower and bite information remains correctly identified.

What should a 3Shape outsourcing brief include?

A familiar software name does not replace a clear handoff. Keep the requested restoration, lab preferences and expected files together. Test the outputs on a representative case before moving routine volume.

  • Include tooth references, restoration type, material and design preferences.
  • For component-based work, identify the required system and library.
  • Record the revision number, reviewer and final approval route.

Frequently asked questions

Can I export STL scans from every 3Shape installation?

Export availability depends on the relevant enabled option and workflow. The official Dental Manager article lists prerequisites; check your installed version and contact your reseller if the export option is absent.

Does PLY export mean the whole design project is included?

No. A PLY scan export and a complete project handoff are different deliverables. Agree what the receiving team needs and what your lab expects back.

Does Mocoore need a specific 3Shape transfer account?

Discuss the case and your software environment first. The transfer channel and recipient details are confirmed for the agreed workflow before files are sent.
