How to send an exocad case to an outsourced designer
A successful exocad handoff needs more than an attachment named final.stl. Agree the receiving workflow, then package the case so the designer understands the work and the lab can use the result.
The short answer
Confirm the software version, transfer route and required outputs first. Include the relevant case data, correctly identified scans, prescription and library information when needed. An STL mesh is not the same as a complete editable CAD project. If using dentalshare, confirm the partner connection and group configuration before sending.
What belongs in the exocad case package?
Use a non-identifying case code and keep the brief with the files. Tell the receiving designer whether this is a new design or a revision to an existing project; that changes what needs to be transferred.
- Identify upper, lower, bite and any additional reference scans clearly.
- State the restoration, tooth numbering system, material and lab preferences.
- Include the agreed project data and exact component or library details for implant-related work.
Should you use dentalshare or an agreed file channel?
exocad documents partner connections through dentalshare. The sending and receiving setup must support that connection. Confirm the actual account and accepted transfer route with your design partner rather than assuming a public contact address is a dentalshare account.
- Confirm the recipient before uploading a business case package.
- Keep CAD project files distinct from exported manufacturing meshes.
- Send corrections as a clearly numbered revision, not another file called final.
How do you check the returned files?
Open the delivered files in the environment that will use them. If project editability matters, make that a trial acceptance item. Matching a file extension alone does not establish version, library or production compatibility.
- Confirm software/build details and any required libraries.
- Verify case ID, units, output formats and revision number against the brief.
- Have your lab approve the design before forwarding it into manufacturing.
Frequently asked questions
Is an STL file enough for exocad outsourcing?
An STL may provide the geometry needed for a particular agreed task, but it does not contain every item in an editable CAD project. Confirm the prescription, related scans and project requirements before transfer.
Can I send a case through dentalshare?
Discuss the receiver’s current setup first. exocad’s documentation describes connected partners and configured groups; the correct transfer route must be confirmed for the two accounts.
Will I receive an editable exocad project?
Specify this when requesting the quote. Editable project delivery, software compatibility and required libraries should be agreed and checked in the first representative case.
